In the early 1960s the Newark-based Four Seasons surprised the pop world by topping the charts with songs such as “Walk Like a Man." Integrating the innocence of doo-wop with the get-up-and-go of rock 'n' roll. But the Four Seasons themselves were no innocents. Jersey Boys showcases their songs, but also illustrates their friendship, their fights, and their imperfect lives. The play follows the group from its hard luck days through its breakthrough and breakup, while also touching on Valli's solo career and offering a glimpse of the group as older, wiser men.

Valli, born Francis Castelluccio, was raised in the projects of Newark. He listened to jazz on the radio, and ditched high school to catch big bands at The Adams Theatre. Early in his career Valli sang in local nightclubs where he honed his vocal skills creating the incredible falsetto sound he is known for.

A pivotal moment in the play comes when Gaudio writes the band's first hit, "Sherry." Another important piece in the Jersey Boys musical focuses on the struggle to make the ballad "Can't Get My Eyes Off You," the song came out in 1967, which became Valli’s breakout hit as a solo artist.
